The rating denotes an individual who has a high level of personal diving skill, has instructor level knowledge of diving theory, has had significant training in how to assist other divers, and is able to assume a role of responsibility for the welfare of other divers in his or her charge. Divemasters are in demand world wide where they oversee general diving activities and serve as underwater guides. Divemasters are the bedrock of the dive industry; without them the sport could not safely operate.
